Wilderness Medicine Academy

Philosophy

When the trail gets rough, the weather turns, and the nearest road is miles away, preparation isn’t optional — it’s essential. The Wilderness Medicine Academy will train you to handle the unexpected with skill, confidence, and calmness under pressure. As a recognized leader in wilderness EMS education and an approved training site for the American Safety and Health Institute and the American Heart Association, we turn outdoor enthusiasts into capable first responders.

Whether you're a weekend warrior or a seasoned guide, our courses will meet you where you are and push your abilities farther. We offer Wilderness First Aid for hikers and campers, Wilderness First Responder and Wilderness EMT for outdoor professionals, plus AHA CPR, Stop the Bleed, and advanced wilderness certifications for Paramedics, RNs, mid-levels, and physicians.

This isn’t just classroom learning — it’s hands-on, dirt-on-your-boots training. You’ll splint fractures in the chill of night, improvise stretchers, manage medical emergencies in rugged terrain, and make big-time decisions when an ambulance isn’t an option. By the end, you won’t just earn a certification — you’ll have the skills to keep yourself and others safe when the wild throws its worst at you.

Whether you’re launching a new career in the outdoors or leveling up your backcountry expertise, The Wilderness Medicine Academy is where adventure meets readiness. Out there, training is survival.

Instructors And Class Size

When you're in a Wilderness Medicine Academy course, you’re not just listening to some random instructor — you’re training alongside a team of seasoned backcountry veterans who have been there, done that, and patched it up in the process. Our educators are professional ski patrollers who execute rescues in driving blizzards, river guides who navigate big whitewater, climbing and mountaineering guides who’ve treated injuries halfway up a route, EMTs and paramedics who work beyond where roads end, and search and rescue technicians who thrive in the highest of the Colorado Rocky Mountains.

These aren’t just résumés — they’re lived experiences, and every lesson taught is grounded in moments when quick thinking and skill made all the difference. You’ll hear stories that will stick with you, learn tips and tricks that work in the real world, and gain the kind of practical know-how that only comes from someone with years in the field.

We keep our class sizes small. That means more one-on-one coaching, more hands-on practice, and more opportunities to hone your skills until they become second nature. Whether you’re learning to stabilize a broken arm on a windswept ridge or caring for your patient in the darkest of nights, your instructors will be right there by your side — offering guidance, sharpening your technique, and pushing you to think like a first responder who's been to a few rodeos.

Accredited by the American Safety and Health Institute and the American Heart Association, our courses don’t just meet industry standards — they surpass them. This is education and training for serious outdoor recreationalists, backcountry guides, SAR technicians, and healthcare professionals who operate in the most unforgiving environments. Out there, you don’t get second chances — we'll make sure you’re ready the first time.

Course Content

Our courses blend the core principles of standard EMS education with the specialized skills and best practices of wilderness medicine. This means you won’t just learn how to handle emergencies — you’ll learn how to handle them when resources are scarce, conditions are harsh, and help might be hours or days away. Every lesson is built around field-expedient methods and protocols, giving you the confidence to respond effectively in any environment, from city streets to remote backcountry trails.

But the training goes far beyond the classroom. You’ll step into realistic scenarios designed to sharpen your critical thinking, push your decision-making under pressure, and challenge you to improvise with whatever materials are available. In our hands-on labs, you’ll practice essential skills like patient assessment, tourniquet application, airway management, splinting, CPR, and more — until they’re second nature.

When the unexpected happens, you’ll be ready to act. With a certification from Rocky Mountain Medics and the Wilderness Medicine Academy, you’ll be the one others turn to when it matters most. Explore our course schedule or contact us to discuss which program fits your goals. Take the first step toward becoming a confident, capable responder in any environment.
